Slibstream

For every edition the festival has a residence: musicians or artists who are inspired by the island and create new work especially for the festival. For this year’s festival I was invited with the kite project Musicaerial. I entered into a special collaboration with the oldest factory in the Netherlands: Royal Tichelaar te Makkum. This became the Slibstream project: a connection with the wind of the island, the music of the festival and with the Frisian pottery. Especially for this occasion the Musicaerial team was expanded with the musicians of the festival itself. Their instrumental line-up was expanded with the Kite. New music was written and performed for daylight and our nightkite. I used my Keramofoon, a specially designed manual recording device for gramophone ceramic-records. We did live recordings outside in the open studio with the various musicians in Frisian sea clay singles. The Keramofoon wrote directly the sound into the Frisian mudflat clay. The singles were firing by the Royal Tichelaar in Makkum into one-off, unique compositions: the fragile phonograms of the wind in combination with the music and the solid ground from the island.
